Taiwan Athletes Won’t Participate In Winter Games Opening Ceremony
After 16 days and 109 events, the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing 2022 officially came to an end on Sunday with the traditional closing ceremony.
A small but enthusiastic group of spectators sat in the stands of Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium on a cold evening in the host city. Some happily waved and waved the Chinese flag as they waited for the evening’s festivities to begin.
Chinese President Xi Jinping sat in the stands next to International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and watched the ceremony unfold.

The screenings were limited and mirrored a silent opening celebration held earlier this month. The organizers focused on snow and ice as the main theme. The center stage of the Bird’s Nest was composed of 11,600 square meters of LED screen which aimed to simulate a “crystal clear ice surface” throughout the ceremony.
The victorious athletes, who looked no less excited than they had been at the opening ceremony, proudly waved their country’s flags in the athletes’ parade.

American bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor was chosen as the American flag bearer for the closing ceremony – the first athlete since 1948 to be chosen as the American flag bearer for both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics.
She missed the chance to carry her country’s flag at the opening ceremony after testing positive for COVID-19 and having to self-isolate.
At the Games, Meyers Taylor won a silver medal in the first ever single bob and a bronze medal in the two women’s bobsled.

A number of parading athletes were heading home with valuable hardware around their necks, proudly displaying their hard-earned awards for the passing cameras.
The United States finished the Beijing Olympics with 25 medals (8 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze). That puts the USA in a tie for fourth (in terms of gold) and fifth (in total medals). Norway topped both categories, with a total of 37 medals – 16 of which were gold. Host nation China finished with 15 medals in total, including nine golds.

At the final ceremony, the organizers held the final award ceremony for the women’s 30 km cross-country mass start. American skier Jessie Diggins won silver after a hard finish. Norwegian Therese Johaug won gold and Finn Kerttu Niskanen bronze.
Diggins revealed after her race that she had contracted food poisoning less than 30 hours before the race. After finishing it, she collapsed and was down for a few minutes. But her exhaustion from earlier in the day disappeared as Diggins jumped up and down on the podium as she accepted her award.
