“Our country and region are facing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said VCU President Michael Rao, Ph.D. “We are in the third and worst outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. The rate of infection with COVID-19 is at the highest level since the beginning of the pandemic. Models show that the number of cases in Virginia will increase through February. Now they are four times more than at the beginning of the autumn semester. So, with health and safety as a top priority, we’re organizing how VCU will begin the spring semester.

() – Virginia Commonwealth University will raise tuition by 3% next fall, an increase the school says is needed to cover salary increases and higher costs caused by inflation.
VCU’s Board of Visitors voted Friday to raise tuition for the 2022-23 academic year, even though students demanded that costs stay where they were last year. The board also voted to raise the mandatory student fee, which the school says is “the lowest for colleges and universities in Virginia,” to $146.

“Despite significant and unprecedented challenges, VCU has not raised student tuition in the past three years,” VCU President Michael Rao said in a statement after the board’s vote.
The university’s proposed budget plan anticipates higher maintenance and utility costs due to inflation. Salaries of teachers, employees and additional teaching staff will also be increased by five percent.

“I think it’s appropriate because we want to take care of our fellow citizens and we want to take care of each other,” said graduate student Samuel Kwong.
“At first it was like, ‘no, it’s not spring break,’ but right now I’d rather be safe and at home than have to go home for spring break in the middle of the semester,” freshman Isabelle Hammond said.
“If you want to go to the beach, you can go in December,” Hammond said. After a nearly two-month winter break, the university is reopening in a phased approach from the schools of medical sciences and the college’s research faculty, staff and practitioners.
