UTSA will jump to the American Athletic Conference on July 1, 2023, and will announce a firm date on Friday as the conference realignment dominoes continue to fall.

The AAC said in a news release Friday morning that arrangements have been made with members leaving Houston, Cincinnati and Central Florida to leave the conference for the Big 12 on July 1, 2023.

This move allowed the six schools that transferred from Conference USA to PMA to begin finalizing their schedules. Charlotte was the first to confirm the 2023 date, and UTSA followed within an hour.

“Given the news of the agreement the American Athletic Conference has reached with Cincinnati, Houston and UCF regarding those institutions retiring in 2023, our intention is to join The American on July 1, 2023,” said director of UTSA athletics, Lisa Campos, in a statement.

As of Friday afternoon, Rice, Florida Atlantic, North Texas and UAB have not yet announced their intention to join the AAC in 2023, although they are expected to follow suit in the coming days.

“The agreement reached between the American Athletic Conference and its three departing members allows us to begin the process of officially joining the American in the near future,” Rice athletic director Joe Karlgaard said in a statement. “We remain proud members of Conference USA for the 2022-23 academic year and look forward to releasing more information about our transition to the American language in the near future.”

When UTSA’s move to the AAC was announced in October, Campos said the move was “scheduled for no later than July 2024,” with the possibility of arriving a year early.

The deal for Cincinnati, Houston and UCF to leave the conference next summer – for a reported $18 million buyout – allowed C-USA schools to speed up the schedule.

UK Commissioner Mike Aresco issued a statement thanking the Presidents of UCF, Cincinnati and Houston “for their efforts and leadership in finding a sensible solution to withdraw the three schools from the conference”.

“All three institutions have enjoyed tremendous success under the American Athletic Conference banner, and all three have been instrumental in taking the conference to great heights, both athletically and academically,” Aresco said. “We wish them well and look forward to welcoming them to our conference in 2022-23.”

Cincinnati, Houston and UCF will join the Big 12 in 2023, with independent BYU joining the league on the same day.

The Big 12, AAC and C-USA moves were prompted by the announcement in July that Texas and Oklahoma would be leaving the Big 12 to join the Southeastern Conference. While many of the ripple effects are becoming clearer, the timetable for departures to Texas and Oklahoma remains uncertain, potentially extending into 2025.

UTSA will play its final competitive seasons in 2022-23 in Conference USA. With former C-USA members Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss heading for the Sun Belt this summer, the 2022 football season will feature 11 teams that will ditch the division format and instead bring the top two together in the league championship.

The AAC is expected to field 14 teams in 2023, with the six newcomers from C-USA joining current members SMU, Tulsa, East Carolina, Temple, Memphis, Navy, South Florida and Tulane.

UTSA’s announcement of its move to the AAC last October came in the midst of a record-breaking football season, during which the Roadrunners started 11-0 and spent several weeks in the national rankings en route to the program’s first Conference USA championship . UTSA also signed coach Jeff Traylor to a 10-year, $28 million contract — an unprecedented amount for a Group of Five head coach.

When the conference’s relocation was announced, Campos and UTSA President Taylor Eighmy trumpeted the increase in awareness, competition and media rights revenue at the AAC. Aresco said the league was drawn to UTSA because of the San Antonio market, the university’s growth and the athletic department’s commitment to competing at the highest level.

UTSA will transfer to AAC 10 years after joining Conference USA. The Roadrunners spent last year – UTSA’s second football season – in the Western Athletic Conference, competing as an independent in 2011. The University of Texas at San Antonio will begin paying tuition and fees for freshmen with family incomes of up to $70,000 starting in fall 2022, expanding the university’s tuition-free program that began in 2019.

This is the first time UTSA has raised the family income threshold of the Bold Promise program, which started at $50,500. Nearly 1,800 students have qualified for the program since its inception, said Lynn Barnes, UTSA’s senior vice provost for strategic enrollment.

To be eligible, students must be recent graduates of a Texas high school, place in the top 25% of their class, and take at least 12 credit hours each semester. You must have completed the Free Student Aid Application and been accepted to UTSA by January 15.

The program covers all tuition and fees for four consecutive years after other financial aid is applied to a student’s account, but does not pay for meals or lodging, Barnes said.

According to the 2020 Texas Public Higher Education Almanac, UTSA’s average tuition and fees cost about $9,700 annually.

UTSA decided to expand the Bold Promise program to “cast a wider net and bring more students into the program,” Barnes said. This higher income eligibility level will open the program to “a few hundred more students.”

The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley recently announced it would raise the income limit for families — to $100,000, the highest income level for a college aid program at a Texas public university, The Texas Tribune reported.

Barnes said UTSA will continue to look for ways to raise its family income threshold to get closer to UTRGV, but the Rio Grande campus has a larger student population that qualifies for its college aid program and receives more of state and federal financial aid than UTSA- Students. According to the Texas Public Higher Education Almanac, nearly 45% of UTSA students receive need-based state Pell grants, compared to 63% of UTRGV students.

Next year, UTSA hopes to offer the Bold Promise program to transfer students, which would also have similar income eligibility and credit hour requirements and a grade point average standard, Barnes said.

The Alamo College District offers a similar program for graduating high school seniors from 36 participating high schools in San Antonio. Launched in 2020, the Alamo Promise program is a last-dollar scholarship initiative that covers students’ tuition and fees for up to three years or until completion of an associate’s degree.
