Usm Academic Calendar Fall 2023 – HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – The University of Southern Mississippi has notified Conference USA of its intention to leave the league on June 30, 2022.
The Golden Eagles announced that the university will leave C-USA after the 2022-23 school year and join the Sun Sign Conference for 2023-24.

A four-paragraph release Friday afternoon outlined the university’s rationale for leaving C-USA a year early, but did not say whether it would join the Sun Belt a year early or simply operate independently for a year.

“The University of Southern Mississippi will terminate its membership in Conference USA effective June 30, 2022. The university will not participate in Conference USA in the 2022-23 academic year. This decision was made in the best interest of the university and the entire Golden Eagle family, including nearly 350 student-athletes and thousands of fans and supporters.
“The university first proposed to Conference USA in early December 2021 its plan to end the university’s membership in June 2022. Since then, the university has clearly and consistently reiterated its intentions for the conference. The university has said from the beginning that it wants to work with Conference USA to reach an amicable severance in which all other conference members offer to cooperate in providing a full schedule for the sports in which the university competes. Conference USA has so far refused to discuss such an agreement with the university.
“The reluctance of the Conference to discuss the concept of secession this year is creating confusion and suspicion for all parties concerned. With the rest of Conference USA slated to compete next year, it’s best to know their schedules. For their benefit, the university publishes its intentions.
