Advisors help students understand how to better develop academic and career goals, become successful students, and their role in the academic community. Advising at UNCG can feel very different from advising in high school. In comparison, choosing classes in high school is relatively easy because there are fewer choices. At UNCG, there are over 100 different majors, giving students a variety of choices when choosing courses.

The College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center (CASA) advises first-year majors in the College of Arts and Sciences. Only organic chemistry, interior architecture, mathematics, philosophy, and physics majors are assigned a faculty advisor instead of a CASA in their first year. When CASA advisors earn at least 24 credit hours, they are assigned a faculty advisor in their department.

The Lloyd International Honors College (LIHC) advises incoming first-year students on SOAR and the International Honors Program during a dedicated Honors College Orientation prior to the start of classes in August. After SOAR, LIHC has two full-time academic advisors to assist students in completing international and interdisciplinary honors programs. In addition, LIHC advises Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, and Goldwater on major national and international scholarships and fellowships.
The Office of Graduate Student Services coordinates and advises all Bryan School business.All programs at the Bryan School are advised by advisors in the Bryan Graduate Student Services Office.
The School of Education’s Office of Student Services advises all students majoring in deafness, elementary, middle school, special education, and a combination of elementary education and special education during SOAR. Students in specific content areas (eg English, Biology, Music, etc.) receive advice from that content area during SOAR.

A team of faculty and professional advisors from the School of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) advises graduate students during SOAR. Once registered, students are assigned to a faculty, professional advisor, or advising center based on their major.
A secondary admissions application process is required for (1) Communication Sciences and Disorders, (2) Human Development and Family Studies, (3) Kinesiology, (4) Public Health Education, and (5) Social Work. In these respective departments, students are prevented from progressing in their advanced courses until formally accepted into the department.

The Students First Office provides academic advising for all exploratory (undivided) majors until they are enrolled in an officially declared major. At SFO, academic advising is a learning process in which you and your advisor take steps to meet joint learning outcomes, work toward your academic success, and achieve your personal, educational, and career goals. Students meet with their SFO advisor twice per semester, once during the first 6-8 weeks of the term and then during the traditional advising and registration period.
