The cost of SOAR booking for one (1) parent or family member is included in your New Student fee. The New Student Fee is a flat fee that covers all SOAR student program fees, accommodation, and materials. The New Student Fee also covers the NAV1GATE new student conference, Rawkin Welcome Weeks, and many other first-year programs. Students will not pay their New Student Fee at SOAR. The new student fee is applied directly to the student account, and cannot be withdrawn.

Some experiences in the school activities of the students have a lot of potential to influence their development as a learning concept. Counselors help students understand how to set good academic and career goals, become successful students, and understand their role in the learning environment. Counseling at UNCG can be very different from high school counseling. In comparison, choosing classes in high school is relatively easy because there are few options. At UNCG, there are more than 100 different majors, giving students many choices when choosing courses.

In the New Student Portal, students can complete the Class Schedule Interest Survey (CSI). Students’ academic advisors will use this information to register students for classes, and they will have the opportunity to finalize their schedule before the spring semester begins. Students must complete this survey to register for the orientation session, so they should complete the survey as soon as possible.
At UNCG, academic programs are organized under seven areas: College of Arts and Sciences, Lloyd International Honors College, Bryan School of Business and Economics, School of Education, School of Health and Human Sciences, College of Visual & Performing Arts, and School of Nursing and, for Prospective Students, the Student Affairs Office will serve as your advising location. Each academic department provides educational advice to meet the needs of its students. First-year counseling is very different from the SOAR counseling experience. Students are assigned to advisors or advising centers based on their majors in the first semester because advising models vary by department.
The College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center (CASA) advises most first-year majors in the College of Arts and Sciences. Only Biochemistry, Interior Design, Mathematics, Science, and Physics majors are assigned by faculty advisors in their first year, instead of CASA. When CASA advisors earn at least 24 credit hours, faculty advisors assign them to their majors.

Lloyd International Honors College (LIHC) advises incoming first-year SOAR students during a dedicated High School orientation before classes begin in August for the International Honors Program. After SOAR, LIHC has two full-time School Counselors available to help students complete the International Honors and Discipline Program. In addition, LIHC provides advice for important national and international scholarships and fellowships, such as Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, and Goldwater.
The Undergraduate Student Services Center coordinates counseling for all business majors at Bryan School. All Bryan programs are advised by counselors in the Office of Bryan Undergraduate Student Services
The Office of Student Services in the School of Education advises all students majoring in deaf professions, elementary, middle grades, special education, and dual majors in education. elementary and special education during SOAR. Students who are academic majors in specific content areas (such as English, biology, music, etc.) will receive advice from the content area during SOAR.

A team of faculty members and professional advisors in the School of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) advise undergraduate students during SOAR. Once registered, students are then assigned to a faculty member, professional advisor, or counseling center based on their major.
Postgraduate admissions application procedures are required for the Departments of (1) Communication Sciences and Disorders, (2) Human Development and Family Studies, (3) Kinesiology, (4) Public Health Education , and (5) Social Work. In each of these departments, students are prevented from progressing in their advanced studies until formal admission into the department occurs.
Students First Office
All first-year students in the College of Visual & Performing Arts are advised by the CVPA Student Success Association. When students have completed their first semester and have taken at least 30 hours, faculty members will notify them of their place.
The School of Nursing’s Office of Undergraduate Counseling provides academic counseling to all first-year neonatal nursing students. In the second year, students are assigned a dedicated faculty advisor.
Admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing major is by application only (near the end of the second year.) Students must maintain minimum academic requirements to continue in this major. The Undergraduate Office provides academic counseling for all (Undecided) Majors until they are declared and officially admitted to a major. At SFO, academic advising is an academic process in which you and your peer advisor work together to meet established learning outcomes, work toward your academic success, and outline steps to achieve personal, academic, and performance goals. Students meet with their SFO advisor twice each semester, once during the first 6-8 weeks of the term and then again during formal counseling and registration.
