The term first generation refers to students who are the first in their families to attend college. More precisely, it means that the student’s parents did not obtain a bachelor’s degree. Students whose parents earned a bachelor’s degree in another country are not first generation by this definition and therefore are not eligible for Machen Florida scholarships. Students who have a sibling in college but whose parent did not earn a master’s degree are considered first-generation students.
No, but it is recommended that you live on campus during your first year so that you can familiarize yourself with the campus and participate in activities coordinated by the Department of Housing and Residence Life. IA scholars must also take SLS1102 in the spring of their junior year. All MFOS Scholars must maintain a 2.0 GPA and earn 24 credits each year to remain eligible and reapply for aid by updating their FAFSA by October 1 of each year. Parents’ income is reviewed each year for scholarship renewal. MFOS staff strongly encourages scholars to submit their FAFSA as often as possible each year.
