UF President Ben Sasse marked the occasion by unveiling a number of states and countries represented by the graduating class of 2023. He also mentioned Gainesville legend Tom Petty.

“When we sing Tom Petty’s song ‘when you stand me at hell’s door, but I won’t back down,’ we don’t mean to be brave, but because this country works hard for him. lifelong followers who embrace great goals with humility, generosity and courage,” said Sasse.
Sasse took over for outgoing president Kent Fuchs in February. Among the college’s graduating class was Madeline Hastie, Math. She says some of the tough times she had going to school only made her and her class stronger.
“I think the student body is still very similar, we’re all still very supportive of each other, we’re all very committed to success and even during that Covid period which was really tough, I didn’t really see that break down. determination. It probably just made us stronger as a university,” Hastie said.
