As UF’s first day of classes in spring 2022 approaches, some students are concerned about the safety of attending in person without a mask mandate amid rising cases of Covid-19.

UF Health Screen, Test and Protection has discontinued its Covid-19 dashboard as of December 31. Information about campus COVID-19 is currently only available through the Florida Department of Health.
“As of Jan. 1, requests for updated information should be directed to the Health Department,” UF health spokesman Ken Garcia wrote in an email.
Some university campuses across the country are gearing up for the start of the semester. Private universities such as Harvard, Howard University and the University of Miami plan to hold classes remotely for part of the spring. In contrast, UF students and faculty prepare for in-person classes.

The decision to keep classes in person was made in consultation with UF health professionals and after guidance from the Florida Board of Regents, Garcia wrote. They added, but did not specify, that the trial at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium will be extended from January 5.
Last Friday, UF sent out a campus summary of the university’s response to Florida’s rising number of Covid-19 cases. The email encouraged students and staff to get tested, vaccinated — including a booster shot — and wear masks.
Student and staff screening services were previously provided by UF Health Screen, Test & Protect, but have been moved to the Student Health Center.

UF Health Screen, Test & Protect was part of the initial emergency response to the outbreak, Garcia wrote in an email. The university has now moved on to the next phase of the response, shifting to local and regional health infrastructure, he wrote. Weekly health screenings and examinations are available for students, faculty and staff.
The changes raised concerns last week as students who tried to register for the Covid-19 test before the start of classes faced some test blocks. From January 4, there are further trial bans.
Brendan Vernish, a 20-year-old chemical engineering major at UF, tried to register for the test on New Year’s Eve. Like the previous semester, Varnish went through ONE.UF to schedule the exam. No appointments available at this time.

“I wanted to feel safe going forward,” Vernish said. “I thought it was important to my peers, classmates and friends.”
With UF’s large population, he said, it’s important that students and faculty avoid spreading the disease to the campus and outside community.
“In my opinion, we are better prepared for the start of classes in late 2020 than we are now, and I expect that the UF will meet at this time and proactively decide to increase testing as things progress.” Vernish said.

“This will reduce the risk of being online for the second half of the semester,” he said. “I don’t think we’re going to follow the same path that Omicron took, and now more than ever we need to take it back.”
18-year-old UF student Brian Ewzik says he’s not optimistic about the start of the semester.
He believes not enough is being done to protect the general student body and wants to see mask mandates, screening requirements and eventually vaccination requirements in certain areas.

While UF could not comment on questions about testing availability, a campus briefing said the university is “ready to increase testing capacity as needed” and “as the pandemic evolves, so will our response.”
