Breaking Down Uconn’s 2017 18 Schedule
Following many universities across the country, the University of Connecticut announced it will require students to get a COVID-19 vaccine when they return to campus in the fall.
“We know that the more UConn students who are vaccinated when classes start in the fall, the safer those students will be, and the safer everyone they come into contact with will be,” said Dr. said Andrew Agwunobi, President and CEO of UConn Health. “The most important step we can take to ensure a safe and successful fall start is to vaccinate as many students as possible.”
Students must take a full vaccination course upon arrival in August. However, individuals who were previously unable to be vaccinated will be able to get vaccinated from UConn Student Health and Wellness upon arrival on campus and must follow modified quarantine measures to take safety precautions.

Despite the mandatory vaccinations, Agwunobi said the university wanted to show empathy for students throughout the process.
The University allows students with medical or personal limitations to submit a waiver to the Office of Student Affairs if the student is unable to be vaccinated. Appeals will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and approved appeals will be subject to additional safety measures such as surveillance testing, isolation of close contacts, mask requirements and residency restrictions.
“We want to make sure that new and returning students get the education and experience they deserve, which we’re used to providing,” Agwunobi said. “We don’t want to disrupt their education, we don’t want to disrupt their experience.”

The university’s rationale for adopting the new policy came from guidance from other colleges following the same guidelines and preparations for a safe and successful fall reopening, taking into account potential falls in the fall and staff concerns about in-person teaching.
Staff on the main and regional campuses are not required to have any specific vaccinations while on the job, but the University strongly encourages them to be vaccinated against COVID-19. UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz said the university is still discussing staffing requests.
“Many students live, work and eat in communal settings on and off campus that are most likely to facilitate the spread of the virus, especially in residence halls and dining halls,” Reitz said. “A highly vaccinated student population would substantially reduce these risks.”

As of June 2, 60.7 percent of students on Storrs’ main campus reported being partially or fully vaccinated, according to Reitz. Also, among 8,000 respondents in a group of 30,000 students, 83.5% informally reported being vaccinated, and 5.9% of participants expressed hesitation or said they would not get vaccinated.
“The Board of Trustees and University leadership take the health and safety of our community, including our student body, very, very seriously,” said Board Chair Dan Toscano. “To that end, we think it’s important to consider whether a covid-19 vaccine should not only be recommended, as it has been in the past, but is also needed to reduce the risk of transmission among students.”
The ultimate goal of the vaccination mission is to promote pre-pandemic lifestyles while focusing on student safety.
Uconn Rematch Set For November 14
“The most important goal of University management and everyone associated with the University is a safe and successful fall start,” Agwunobi said. “As you know, we offer a world-class education and an incredible student experience, and to make sure this happens, everyone needs to feel safe and secure.”
“I want to express my gratitude for the fact that next year I will be walking into a fully vaccinated and safe classroom of students, and I am very excited about that, and the feeling that we can go back home together,” said Ethan Werstler, a UConn said the undergraduate.
Nina Reines of Brucka said she felt safer attending a college that required the vaccine, and that the decision would make college life easier for other incoming students.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to start my education in a relatively normal way,” Reines said. “Even though I’m in the midst of an online orientation, I already feel so connected to the University and I can’t wait to see what it’s like
