Syracuse Spring Break 2023 – Chancellor Syverud said the four-day weekend fall break will be between Labor Day and Thanksgiving starting next year.
Syracuse University will offer fall break beginning in 2023, Chancellor Kent Sverud announced Wednesday at a meeting of the university’s senate.
Syracuse Spring Break 2023
The four-day break, which spans between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, comes after intense pressure from its student body, Sieverd said. SA President David Bruen’s plan to increase the number of health days on the SU calendar is the first time SA has offered a fall break.

During his speech, the chancellor spoke about the recently announced Micron facility, which will be the largest private investment in New York State history. The project needs $100 billion in support.
SU, which played a role in recruiting the company to the field, plans to work with Micron on R&D collaborations, providing student internships and creating a pipeline of SU students.
“To take full advantage of this opportunity, we must move quickly and creatively,” Sieverd said. “How prepared and proactive we are as a university will have a direct impact on our success and Macron’s in the region.”

Although the Micron plant has many positive benefits for SU, Senator Sam Horowitz said the university should be careful when transferring employees to the company.
“Micron needs a lot of talented employees, and one of the places they can look for talented and experienced employees is Syracuse University,” Gorovitz said. “We must be prepared to deal with the loss of many of our great employees to Micron, which has deep pockets and can be an especially attractive job opportunity.”
Coran Claver, chair of the University Senate’s LGBTQA Equity and Advocacy Committee, summarized the committee’s recommendations at the meeting.
Expect To Pay More On Spring Break Than Originally Planned
Claver said SU needs to keep its LGBTQ resource center adequately staffed to meet growing student demand, especially after laying off one of its full-time employees.
“The center’s failure to meet the university’s strategic plan commitments on diversity, equity, inclusion and access has been a setback,” Claver said. “Reinstating the Assistant Center Director position is the first step in meeting the needs of students and retaining existing Center staff and all the cross-departmental partnerships and relationships created and maintained by those staff.”
Claver said SU should work with the committee to design and implement DEIA policies within the Office of Human Resources. The university should create a clear timeline for providing and updating online resources for transgender students and invest in training for faculty and staff about the LGBTQ student experience, he said.

Senator Kellyn Tasber, a representative of the graduate student body on the university’s Senate, said the recommendations were “essential” to support DEIA’s action plan.
“As a graduate student representative, as well as a member of the LGBTQ community among graduate students, these recommendations will make a big difference not only for graduate students, but for the student population as a whole,” Tasber said.
