Summer challenges are a great way to encourage students to keep reading over the summer. They have tasks to complete and be rewarded while reading and having fun.
Every year I do something new and new for the students. Many repeat students participate year after year, and I want to challenge them in new ways as they grow. This year, I felt the theme should focus on mental health and wellness. Like most of us, I have seen a significant increase in the mental health needs of students over the past few years. Focusing on how reading calms and relaxes the mind seems like a natural fit for this year.
In 2021 Reading Challenge
I used Canva as my creative tool. If you don’t already have a free teacher account and create a lot of promotional materials, you should have one. I found a fun summer themed poster that guided me through the options I had on my quiz list. I designed a space for students to record their summer reading on the page, and to clearly see the directions. Below are the challenges I chose this summer:
Every year I try to find the word in a different way to introduce my summer reading challenges. I will start by displaying the book in front of the library. It’s usually the first thing students see when they walk into the school library, so I like to use that ad space. I display summer themed books and paper copies of the quiz for students to grab and go. I also have a portable display on our soft chair where I display summer themed information and books.
I will also promote the exam through digital means. I created a page on my school’s library website just for summer reading information. Also, I will make the Summer Reading Challenge a major focus of the library’s May community newsletter. To get the word out to teachers, I sent a faculty email asking them to introduce it to their English-only classes.

Cultivating a love of reading and combining that with relaxation and imagination has benefits all summer long. Challenge your students this summer and keep the reading and fun going.
