Join us in the amazingly beautiful and diverse city of Cape Town on the West Coast of South Africa. The program helps students understand how public communication affects societal issues such as health, academic advocacy, public policy, and environmental sustainability. Students not only learn about the history of South Africa and the impact of apartheid on society, but do so by partnering and working with non-profit organizations in their field of interest to determine how social forces affect current societal issues. Students learn how to write and research for a public audience while developing their communication skills by working in real-world settings.

Program excursions include an overnight tour experience at the District Six Museum, Hermanus resort town, Table Mountain, local vineyards, Aquila Private Game Reserve, Cape Ostrich Farm, Boulder Penguin Colony and Robben Island. And by learning the language, one can become a ready global leader. That’s why the University of Florida (UF) created the Global Officer (Project GO) program to help students acquire language and communication skills. Awarded by the Department of Defense, this program is open to cadets and midshipmen enrolled in colleges and universities. By joining the UF group, you will reach a higher level of language acquisition than a full year of study. Project GO is fully funded professional development training that qualifies you for career advancement and other special duty assignments. Your global journey with UF begins with an application on the Project GO website.
The UF Project GO program offers scholarships to ROTC students to participate in a fully funded 8-week summer language program in Turkish or Swahili. The 2023 summer program will be held on the University of Florida campus. The program offers basic Swahili and basic and intermediate Turkish. The program includes visits to prominent communities and cultural centers in Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando and Tampa.
The GO project provides linguistic, social and regional expertise and experience in UF Swahili and Turkish ways to identify, navigate and influence change in specific regions of the world. Due to its strategic position on the continent and extensive cooperation in economic, regional and global security issues, America has strong bilateral relations with East African countries. Knowledge of Swahili, the Francophone language of East and Central Africa, and the cultures it represents is key to understanding and strengthening these relationships. Students on the Swahili track will gain the exposure, knowledge, and competence necessary to communicate with the Swahili-speaking peoples of East Africa.
Turkey is an important traditional country connecting Europe and the United States to Central Asia and the Middle East. Likewise, it serves as an active founding member of NATO and maintains US military service units located at Incirlik Air Base and Izmir Air Station. In fact, due to the continuation of the global refugee crisis and regional unrest in the Middle East, which has its roots in Afghanistan and Syria, US-Turkey relations in international, military and cultural affairs have become even more important.
