Consider the work that the word “nonbinary” does in disrupting the codes of gender, sexuality, race, and other categories of being and knowing. For this question, we understand that “non-binary” serves as a direct challenge to the persistence of binary logic, ethics, and orientation. Not only found in, but perhaps most recognized in, discussions of gender and sexuality, non-binary must be thought in relation to deep conceptions of identity and belonging on the spectrum of power and difference. Feminist theory has long focused on the problematic aspects of binary thinking, be it the dyads of nature/culture, sex/gender, biology/culture, human/non-human, or individual/collective. Right now, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are seeing the consequences of non-binary fact/fiction thinking and schism in public discourse and everyday life. Non-binarity directs attention to the power and sometimes precarious status of ways of being, knowing and doing that lie outside such epistemological, structuring, norm-derived pairings.
, his first issue devoted to the theme of “transformation” (Sticker, Currah, Jones) of gender, human/non-human divisions, region, power, and racial identity. Over the next twelve years, the popular media landscape experienced a veritable explosion of images and narratives about non-binary ways of being. From performer Billy Porter, to writer, artist and activist Alok Vaid-Menon, to Billions Asia actress Kate Dillon, non-binary is now circulating in popular culture and podcasts at a rate that can be surprising. In any case, in feminist, critical race, postcolonial, and queer theory, nonbinary continues to receive, at best, an inclusive accommodation in discussions of trans- or, at worst, neglect. This is not to say that in all trans work the non-binary should be dissected. Rather, it should be recognized that nonbinary must be considered for its relationship to trans- as well as for its differences and challenges to that concept, along with the intersection of identities of race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, ability, age. , and religion, etc.. We, as guest editors, ask how it is that non-binary representations and narratives circulate through culture, because it is the case that non-binary and its intersections with other identities continue to be overlooked in relation to LGBTKIA+, feminist . theory, critical race, postcolonial and, especially, trans studies, and how we can resist binary ideologies and practices to reposition non-binary as an intentional practice of freedom. Non-binary, in short, could be a way to finally implement a feminist life – a life unfettered by the normative, circumscriptive impositions that derive, in no small part, from heteropatriarchy.
