San Jose State University students are getting closer to having their own race to honor legendary athletes who left their mark on history.
The local college is looking to create an Urban Policy Project, which will include the trajectory and history of the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. Assembly member Ash Kalra received $9 million from the state Legislature, with the total cost estimated at $25 million. The school is working to raise more money.

“We have an important part that receives money from the state, and we hope that we can help reduce some private funds and money in the center, as well as public money so that we know for sure that the we have resources to do this,” Kalra told San José Spotlight.
The Speed City moniker came to SJSU after its athletes competed in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Standing at the podium, award winners Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised fist in the air when they celebrated the fight against racism and inequality. This iconic moment started the Olympic Project for Human Rights and was captured in a statue of the school campus.
Third-year SJSU athlete Kaiya Johnson said walking on would mean the world to the team. The school now shares a track with De Anza College, about 11 miles away.

Smith and Carlos were sent home immediately after the strike, according to Ernie Clark, SJSU’s assistant track and field coach — and had trouble finding work afterward.
For Jay C. Williams, an SJSU student and member of the Black Student Union, the Smith/Carlos legacy is about protection from adversity. He said that these important figures in history and the past represent the present.

“If the school believes in these new athletes, I really think a lot of good things can happen in the future,” Williams told the San José Spotlight.
SJSU senior football player Jalen Adams said home will boost the team’s confidence. She said the courage shown by Smith and Carlos inspired her to speak out at Black Lives Matter protests.
“I know what they did … I encouraged them to do it,” he said. “It’s now up to us to live up to the legacy they created.”

In 2016, the university announced plans to restart its track and field program in 2018, 50 years after it ended following the 1968 Olympics. There were also plans to build a new track and field. at the time, but financial delays affected him according to the media. In 2019, after updating the track’s design and restoring its history, it was replaced by a parking lot, Williams said.
Charles Ryan, SJSU’s director of track and field and cross country, said the school doesn’t see the value of the criticized track program for veteran athletes. Ryan said it was his job and job to explain the history of the school. His team should be shown the respect other teams have given them.

“My children will finally feel valued when we have our own center,” she told San José Spotlight.
“These men took the biggest chance of their lives and stood up for racial injustice, stood up for Black Americans,” he said. “They were given arrows and daggers, and their lives got worse when who returned as Olympic champions because they chose to be brave on the world’s biggest stage.
Kalra said if the Rapid City Act is completed in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the world will see Smith and Carlos in a new light. He said the interstate track will allow athletes to train at a world class level and restore SJSU to its former glory.

“This will be an opportunity for us to showcase San Jose State University and the great partnership at SpeedCity,” he said. “Carlos and Smith deserve their release. The country should know more and the world about their story and where they went.”

San José State University (San Jose State or SJSU) is a public university in San Jose, California. Founded in 1857, SJSU is the oldest university on the West Coast and a school that is part of the California State University (CSU) system.
