Groundbreaking Ceremony Set For New Spartan Athletics Center

San Jose State University Provost Vincent Del Casino announced that what many college students fear is the inevitable: The fall semester will be mostly, if not entirely, online.

Del Casino shared his school’s plans for the start of the 2020-21 school year, which is set to begin Aug. 17, in a phone interview with The Chronicle on Wednesday. San Jose State will offer nearly all classes online, on an as-needed basis. Continue social distancing in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Other universities have followed suit, although San Jose State is one of the first to present its ideas.

“We’re really looking to get as much of our catalog online as we can now,” Del Casino said. “We are doing this because it is likely that we will limit large gatherings in the fall in order to maintain physical distance. Our goal is to have as many changes as possible for those student.”

San Jose State is one of many schools in the Bay Area and across the country wondering how to host the fall semester. Students and faculty at UC Berkeley are gearing up for continued online learning for the new school year; Stanford Provost Percy Drell, at the Faculty Senate meeting last week, confirmed that one option is to start the school year in the winter quarter (skipping the fall quarter), according to Stanford Daily.

Del Casino, who spent five years starting the online program at the University of Arizona, said San Jose State hopes to offer in-person classes, such as art and dance, in the fall. School officials are reviewing their campuses for ways to spread out students and maintain social distancing. Their plans are not final, almost four months before the start of the fall semester.

One option being considered is to use the outdoor space, in part to reduce wind problems. It’s a viable option given the Gulf’s climate, as Del Casino pointed out.

Another cornerstone of San Jose State’s strategy is online summer training and hybrid learning for about 500 teachers. Del Casino sees this as an important step, so they have “more tools in their arsenal” when they resume training in the fall.

The big question is whether college students are willing to pay full tuition for an online experience. Many schools in the United States have offered to cut tuition for the spring semester despite going online in mid-March, prompting complaints and several lawsuits from students. students and their parents.
