San Jose State University (San Jose State or SJSU) is a public university in San Jose, California. Founded in 1857, SJSU is the oldest public university on the West Coast and a founding campus of the California State University (CSU) system.

San Jose State University was founded in 1857 as Minns Ewing Normal School in San Francisco. Founded by George W. Means.

In 1862, by act of the California Legislature, Minns Ewing Normal School became the normal school of the State of California, and 54 women graduated from the three-year program.

The school moved to San Jose in 1871 and S. Washington Square Park was located at 4th and San Carlos Streets, where the campus remains today.

In 1881 a large bell was erected to commemorate the school. The bell was inscribed with the words “California State Normal School, A.D. 1881” and would ring on special occasions until 1946, when the college received a new bell.

The original bell can be seen on the SJSU campus to this day and is still associated with various traditions and rituals.

In August 1882, the southern campus of the California State Normal School, which later became the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), opened in Los Angeles.

In 1921, the California State Normal School changed its name to State Teachers College in San Jose.

In 1935, State Teachers College became California State College and the school’s name was again changed to San Jose State College.

In 1972, based on criteria established by the Board of Trustees and the Coordinating Council for Higher Education, SJSC was granted university status and renamed California State University, San Jose.

In 1922, State Teachers College in San Jose adopted the Spartans as the school’s official mascot and nickname. Mascots and nicknames before 1922 included Daniel, Teacher, Pedagog, Normals and Normalites.

In 1930, the Department of Justice was established as a two-year degree program in police science. It has the distinction of being the first to offer a policing degree in the United States. A stone memorial and plaque stands near the site of the original police academy near Tower Hall.

In 1942, the old gym (now Yoshihiro Uchida Hall, named after legendary SJSU judo coach Yoshi Uchida) was used to register and round up Japanese Americans before they were sent to internment camps. Incidentally, members of Uchida’s family were cremated in some of these camps.

In 1963, in an effort to save Tower Hall from demolition, SJSU students and alumni held a testimony and signed petitions before the Board of Trustees of State College, St. Telegram. As a result of these efforts, the tower, a major campus landmark and symbol of SJSU, was renovated and reopened in 1966. The tower was rotated again and restored in 2007. Tower Hall is registered with the California Office of Historic Preservation.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, San Jose State College saw increased political activism and civic awareness among its students, including large protests against the Vietnam War. One of the largest protests on campus in 1967 was when the Dow Chemical Company—a major manufacturer of napalm used in the war—came to campus to hold a job recruitment drive. An estimated 3,000 studs and standers surrounded the 7th Street administration building and more than 200 studs and teachers fell to the ground in front of the recruits.

In 1985 the CADRE Laboratory for New Media was founded. It is believed to be the second oldest multimedia lab of its kind in the United States.

International And Comparative Education Program

In 1999, San Jose State and the city of San Jose agreed to combine their main libraries to create a joint city-university library located on campus, the first known partnership of its kind in the United States. The combined library faced backlash, with critics saying the two libraries’ goals were too different and that the project would be too expansive. Despite the opposition, the $177 million project went ahead and the new Martin Luther King Jr. Library opened in 2003 on time and on budget. The new library has won several national awards since its inception.

In the 2006-07 fiscal year, SJSU received a record $50+ million in private gifts and $84 million in capital campaign contributions.

That same year, SJSU President Don Kassing launched SJSU’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign called “Acceleration: A Campaign for San Jose State University.” The initial goal of the multi-year campaign was to raise $150 million, but it was later increased to $200 million due to the rapid success of the campaign. The campaign will raise more than $208 million, surpassing its goal a year earlier than expected.

In 2008, SJSU received the CASE Wealthgain Award for raising over $100 million. SJSU was one of approximately 50 institutions nationwide honored by CASE in 2008 for overall achievement in academic fundraising.

In 2012, NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California awarded SJSU $73.3 million to participate in the development of systems to improve the safety and efficiency of air and space travel. NASA scientists, SJSU faculty and graduate students worked together on the effort. The grant was the largest federal award in SJSU’s history.

The SJSU main campus consists of approximately 55 buildings located on a 154-acre (62.3 ha) rectangular site in downtown San Jose. The campus is bordered by San Fernando Street to the north, San Salvador Street to the south, S. 4th Street to the west, and S. 10th Street to the east. South Campus, which houses many of the school’s athletics facilities, S. is located approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of the main campus on 7th Street.

The California State Normal School did not find a permanent home until it moved from San Francisco to San Jose in 1871. The original campus of the California Normal School in San Jose consisted of several rectangular, wooden buildings with a central square of grass. The wooden buildings were destroyed by fire in 1880 and replaced in 1881 by interlocking stone and masonry structures of almost identical configuration.

The buildings were declared hazardous after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and were demolished after an aftershock of a size that was predicted to destroy the buildings and there was no damage. Consequently, demolition was halted and parts of the buildings were converted into the four halls that still survive: Tower Hall, Morris Daly Auditorium, Washington Square Hall, and Dwight Beitel Hall. These four structures still stand today and are the oldest buildings on campus.

Beginning in the fall of 1994, portions of San Carlos Street, 7th Street, and 9th Street on campus were closed to vehicular traffic and turned into a campus sidewalk and gray zone. San Carlos Street was renamed Paseo de San Carlos, 7th Street became Paseo de Cesar Chavez, and 9th Street is now called Ninth Street Plaza. The project was completed in 1996.
