Last Wednesday, college counselors from the International College Counselor participated in the official SUS Florida conference only and heard from the leaders of all 12 Florida institutions.

UCF received more than 49,000 applications last year and accepted 7,131 students. In the Class of 2025, UCF welcomed one of the school’s most talented groups, including 107 National Merit Scholars and 30 National Hispanic Scholars. Students come from all 50 states, and approximately 48% of the student body identifies as minority. New degrees this year include a BS in Data Science and a BS in Career and Technical Education. The school’s Top 10 Knight program continues to guarantee acceptance into the top 10% of Florida graduates. UCF has admissions and will begin reviewing applications this month.
University Of Florida’s President Is Stepping Down
UF is ranked #6 among public universities by US News and World Report. The school offers over 120 graduate students. Last year, UF received 53,000 applications and accepted 15,000 students in the Summer B or Fall semesters. Six hundred students were accepted through UF’s Innovation Academy, a spring/summer program that integrates a gifted student into 25 courses. Another 3,600 students were accepted through UF’s PaCE program, a hybrid program in which students begin courses online and then complete their degree on campus . Academic success over four years – including rigor and academics taught in high school – is the most important factor in admission. In a new initiative, UF students in any major can now pursue a Certificate in AI Fundamentals and Applications. UF recently opened the Lavender Living Learning Community at the Springs Complex, an initiative to create gender-inclusive housing for LGBTQ+ students. This year, UF added an article to their application to ask students about gainful employment. Admissions representatives noted that they like a good essay that provides information about the student and how the student can contribute to the school. Students applying to the Honors Program must complete two additional essays. Admissions representatives also stated that the essay should be about the UF Honors Program, and students should not deviate from the topic. Some important points: UF does not consider heritage in admissions, does not accept majors, and does not consider AP in admissions.

FAMU is one of the largest historically black schools in the United States, offering quality education at an affordable cost. To be considered for admission, students must report their high school education and grades through the Student Self-Reporting Academic Record (SSAR), provide two letters of recommendation, and submit an essay of at least 500 words on a topic of their choice. According to the legal representative, overcoming obstacles or problems is a good thing. Students must register by November 1, which is the deadline for all courses. The school offers more than 50 degrees in a variety of academic programs, including medicine, nursing, journalism, health sciences, engineering, architecture, and business.

The campus sits on 800 acres, 400 of which are restored or preserved land. This year, the school renovated the Student Services Plaza and opened three new facilities: the Recreation and Wellness Center, the Community Counseling Center, and Lucas Hall, home of the School of Entrepreneurship. Construction is underway on a new 116,000 sq. ft. building. Ft. of the Water School, which will help students explore issues related to water, such as climate change, the global economy, and environmental health. FGCU’s golf coaching program is one of 18 PGA-accredited programs in the country, and the only one in Florida. They also have a strong internship program and are ranked #2 in the state for finding jobs for their students. New positions include Construction Management in the College of Engineering, along with Supply Chain Management and Analytics and Computing, both in the College of Business, and Digital Media and Design in the College of Arts and Sciences. FGCU buildings have three ways to serve as social spaces.
In Florida, public universities were ranked on key metrics, including retention rates, four-year graduation rates, and cost of attendance. Based out of Miami, FIU did very well and was named the #1 public school in Florida. FIU is proud of the Aquarius Reef Base, the world’s only underwater research facility, where students can learn about global threats, marine ecosystems, and more. FIU has a very diverse student body, with students from 381 high schools, 66 states, and 86% of students who identify as Black, African American, or Hispanic. The school also has the opportunity to offer more bachelor’s and master’s degrees to Spanish-speaking students. Opening in 2022 will be a new dormitory with 750 beds and a new building for the Green School of International and Public Affairs. FIU offers Top 10% Admission: students who graduate from a Florida high school in the top 10% of their class will receive an admissions pathway. Florida Poly is the newest school to join SUS Florida and focuses exclusively on STEM education. U.S. News and World Report ranked Florida Poly as one of the top 40 non-doctorate engineering programs, and Affordable Schools ranked the #2 school in the country for offering affordable mechanical engineering degrees. Florida Poly welcomed its largest freshman class this fall, and now includes a total enrollment of 1,550. New this year is Cybersecurity Engineering, and Florida Poly has partnered with the US Navy to prepare students for the Navy’s advanced nuclear capability. Candidate Program Office (NUPOC). The school added new club sports, such as men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, and archery. The Florida Poly Robotics team continues to grow and win the highest level of competition at VEX and Combat.
