In different cultures and belief systems, the color orange symbolizes the sun, creativity, warmth, freedom, passion and fire. Mountain. Joy channels that bright, bold, and brilliant energy on their third full-length album of 2022, Orange Blood, which is slated for release June 17 via Island Records. The title track, out today on all platforms, hangs on softly strummed guitar as floating vocals emerge over sparse sound before buzzing harmonies move hazy. Watch the accompanying video here.
Orange Blood explores a sonic spectrum of southern daydreams, playful guitar-playing psychedelic rock, and other artistic alchemy distilled from sessions in the Southern California desert under the watchful sun. When the global pandemic canceled the bands tour with the Lumineers in 2020, Matt and Sam retreated to the desert. Spending time in a house with Matt’s girlfriend and brother, mushroom-fueled hikes, late-night conversations about life, and a thirst for healing brought Orange Blood to life. “I was definitely drawn to the color orange,” says singer Matt Quinn. “When we were in the desert, everything revolved around the sun. I started toying with the idea that the light we see is this kind of orange blood that runs through everything and brings what it touches to life.”
“Our last album was an escapist album,” says Matt. “It had a darker feel. When we were in Joshua Tree, there were so many sad things in the world. We wanted to build something that finds its beauty in the fact that the world has always been crazy. We were trying to figure out a way to be present enough to appreciate our environment even though it’s in decline.” Back in Philadelphia, they finished the album in a house with the full line-up and the producer and collaborator of longtime Caleb Nelson.
