Philadelphia Internships Summer 2023 – The University of Pennsylvania Summer Internship Program is a 10-week intensive summer research opportunity available to undergraduate students. Interns will be assigned a Principal Investigator (PI) based on shared research interests. During their time at Penn, interns will work with PIs and other lab advisors to develop the research and lab skills needed for future graduate experiences. In addition to laboratory work, interns will participate in scientific seminars, participate in professional development seminars, college preparatory workshops, and have the opportunity to present at a SUIP symposium. SUIP is designed for students who wish to pursue a PhD or MD-PhD in biological research.
Program dates for 2023 are Monday, June 5, 2023 to Friday, August 11, 2023 (estimated move-in date: Sunday, June 4, 2023). Participants can expect to participate in laboratory and program activities for about 40 hours per week.

Applicants must be enrolled at a four-year university for the fall semester following completion of the program. Graduate students are not eligible to participate. Although applicants are not required to have previous research experience, preference is given to applicants who have completed their second or second year. Students must be able to participate in the entire 10-week program. We encourage applications from students from all backgrounds, especially those from underrepresented, disadvantaged minorities, first-generation students, and students with disabilities.
SUIP-DAPPG (Diversity Action Plan in Genomics), SUIP-CCI (Centre for Cell Therapy and Immunology) and SUIP-CFAR (Center for AIDS Research) are SUIP affiliate programs. Students are selected for associate programs based on their research interests. Applicants do not need to complete a separate application to be considered for these programs. All compensation is the same as general SUIP. Candidates applying to the Associate Program will also be considered for the SUIP Joint Program.
If you would like to be considered for an affiliate program, please indicate which program in your personal statement. If accepted into the affiliate program, students will continue to participate in all SUIP activities and will be provided with additional content and specific research activities based on the affiliate group.
Paleontology Internship Opportunities — Elevation Science Institute
The purpose of the Diversity Action Plan for the PENN Genome Program (DAPPG) is to increase the number of underrepresented students choosing careers in genomics and genomics by providing opportunities for genome research. The program supports summer research internships and post-baccalaureate programs designed to improve the training of students seeking professional degrees.
The Center for Cellular Immunotherapy organizes a summer internship program in the field of cellular immunotherapy and oncology. Participating laboratories share the goal of understanding how the immune system interacts with cancer and developing interventions to improve antitumor immunity. This field of study represents the intersection of tumor biology, immunology, cell and molecular biology and bioengineering.
SUIP-CFAR (Center for AIDS Research) scholars will participate in mentored HIV/AIDS research. Research topics include HIV basic/transformational science, clinical/behavioral science, implementation science, and HIV prevention research. SUIP-CFAR Scholars will learn key concepts in community-based biological, clinical, behavioral, and AIDS research and build on their professional skills.

Applications for SUIP 2023 opened on October 1, 2022 through the Penn application. All entries must be due by February 1, 2023 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. All application components, including letters of recommendation, must be received by the deadline. Incomplete applications or applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered.
For candidates who wish to apply through the Leadership Coalition, the application portal opened on November 1, 2022 and will close on February 1, 2023 at 11:59 p.m.

Two letters of recommendation are required. We strongly recommend letters from academic staff who know you personally and can comment on your academic and research abilities. Requests for letters of recommendation will be sent through the application portal to the email address provided by the applicant.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to prioritize mentors based on their research interests. SUIP lab placements are determined based on mentor availability and student interests.
Mentors are selected from a pool of more than 600 faculty members affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Biology (BGS). The mentors we work with have a strong commitment to helping students and have extensive experience mentoring, training and teaching students, postdocs and staff.
