Osceola School District Announces 2019 20 Bell Times And School Calendar

The annual competition is open to Osceola County students enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade, including public, charter, private and home school students.

Students are asked to use crayons, markers, or paint to describe an electrical safety topic listed by grade level on the registration form. A local jury will select the 12 best entries to be used for each calendar month, which will be included in the company’s 2023 calendar.

Each student who submits an application will receive a calendar and a chance to win a family ticket to H20 Island Water Park.

The 12 winning students will have artwork featured in the calendar and receive a cash prize of $150. The first prize winner, selected from 12 student winners, will have artwork featured on the calendar cover along with the student’s name and affixed to one of the team’s vehicles for a year.

To further encourage participation, the first prize winner’s school will receive $750 in art supplies, and the school with the most total contest entries will receive $500 in art supplies.

While many students are probably soaking up the sun, University of Florida Opera students are busy touring Osceola County during their spring break. However, their audience was not the typical opera enthusiast; they are high school students.

From March 5-8, twelve UF opera students turned classrooms, hallways and even cafeterias at nine different schools into their own stage to share their passion for performing with others. Choir students are often not exposed to operatic music.

“This is part of what they want to do as musicians,” said Dr. Elizabeth Graham, professor emeritus and head of the School of Music’s voice department. “They want to learn and practice their craft. This is a good way to achieve both. They have the opportunity to perform in front of the students, and on the other hand, the students can see children not far from their age group on stage performing opera scenes and enjoying the performance.”

Led by Dr. Elizabeth Graham and Dr. Tony Offerle, the UF Opera House also hosts seminars and talks so their young audience can interact with the performers, ask them questions, and learn more about their art form.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to share opera with the students of Osceola County,” said Offerle, associate professor and artistic director of the School of Music. “We hope that our students will gain a valuable musical experience that will inspire them to continue playing music throughout their studies.”

Each participating high school is provided with a curriculum guide that integrates UF Opera performances with history, language, theater and music lessons. Since its inception, this outreach program has been an excellent example of how to successfully create an interdisciplinary program that engages and inspires students.

What has become an area-wide tour for the first time, Graham says, began with a simple idea to improve education and accessibility so students could experience seeing opera.

“It was years ago that we were working on the Florida Celebration, and the idea was to expose public school students to, especially opera and classical music,” Graham says. Years later, the UF Opera House continues to educate and inspire the next generation of performers by simply doing what they do best.

“It was great for me to see these young people wanting to do this and bring this kind of music, carry that legacy forward,” Graham said. “They need to see that there is joy in performing classical music, performing opera and telling a story.” It’s theater, it’s singing, all of it together. It’s a beautiful art form.”
