Norfolk, Va. () – A university located in the Hampton Roads area offers a unique course for those interested in learning more about brewing.

According to a statement on the school’s website, Old Dominion University in Norfolk offers a brewing course that students earn a certificate for. The course begins March 13 and is a joint effort with the University of Richmond and the Virginia Beach Beer Alliance.

The course takes one year to complete and covers the science behind brewing as well as the business of brewing.

According to the statement, the course guides students through all aspects of the craft beer business, from sourcing high-quality ingredients and raw materials to handling, processing, packaging and distributing the final product.

“The School of Continuing Education is thrilled to bring this world-class educational opportunity to ODU,” said School of Continuing Education Director Robert Doherty. “Our partnership with the University of Richmond and the Virginia Beach Beer Alliance allows us to leverage the established program and tailor it to meet the needs of Hampton Roads brewers.”

The class meets on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the ODU campus and at local breweries, class sometimes meets on Saturdays. The price of the unit is $2,499, which includes all materials.

Norfolk, Va. – With new requirements for the spring semester, many Old Dominion University students are hoping to get tested for COVID-19 before classes start.

Officials at Old Dominion University say the spring 2022 semester will begin as planned with departments and full staff.

“Hopefully their decision doesn’t put anyone on campus at risk. Hopefully we don’t have an issue and we get to go home,” ODU junior Zabia Evans said.

One of the new requirements is that students living on campus must show a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours before coming to campus.

“Some students cannot take exams in time when they have to return to campus. “I’m lucky in my area that I can get an appointment in advance on a Saturday,” Evans said.

ODU also requires eligible students and staff to receive a Covid-19 booster shot. There are medical and religious exceptions to the law. But those students must undergo weekly Covid-19 testing. ODU senior Alex Burton hopes students will have more testing options on campus.

“You know I want to have ODU, you know you have a testing space for incoming students if they need it,” Burton said.

Burton said school officials also sent an email to students. ODU also randomly tests students regardless of vaccination status, Burton said.

“You only know diagnosis by testing. So they can test people who have been vaccinated to see what kind of numbers they get,” Burton said.

On Tuesday, ODU officials sent students the below statement regarding the test requirements and provided resources on where and how students can access the tests.

“Old Dominion University requires students living on campus to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test as part of their return to campus. In light of the recent nationwide shortage of COVID-19 testing, ODU Student Health Services is offering free COVID-19 testing. -19 Testing Services This week for local students and out-of-town students can use the on-campus testing service from January 9. If the student tests positive, we ask that they notify the university’s Covid care team at [email protected], so staff can follow the latest CDC and VDH guidance to guide them through contact tracing, isolation and isolation protocols.
