During the first phase, students spend 46 weeks completing interdisciplinary prep internship courses that cover basic scientific concepts in biology, anatomy and physiology. Learn the behavioral and social aspects of medicine and develop the skills you’ll need during your studies to interact with patients and other healthcare providers.

Our language acquisition course introduces you to basic science concepts with case-based clinical learning exercises. Subsequent organ systems courses take place in a dynamic mix of small and large group sessions to promote active learning.
Participate in integrated longitudinal courses in the afternoon. These include clinical skills training, with a focus on the integration of the structural content of anatomy, histology, pathology and radiology; health systems science topics; and a Continuum Ambulatory Practice Experience (CAPE). You will also receive peer-to-peer and faculty-to-peer support during the Learning Community: Social Sciences, Humanities, Ethics and Professionalism (SHEP) meetings.
During the first phase, you will participate in problem-based learning cases, small group discussions, large group lectures, seminars, clinical skills training, clinical simulations and bedside learning experiences.

You also have the opportunity to participate in research. This may include completing literature searches in a relevant area of study; apply basic statistical analysis and data presentation; keep a laboratory notebook with records of experiments and research notes; and attend lectures and lab meetings. If you choose to participate in research, present your research findings and prepare an abstract for presentation at an appropriate special meeting.
You will also have time to explore individual interests or participate in tutoring sessions to improve your performance in areas of study you find difficult.
This schedule represents the first phase of the NYU Long Island School of Medicine curriculum. All students go through the first 46 weeks of medical school on the same timeline. Students participate in longitudinal courses including Health Systems Sciences and Population Health, Learning Communities, CAPE, and Medicine Practice, as well as organ systems courses throughout the first phase.

During the second phase, students participate in core employee orientation and rotations at NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island and our clinical training sites for 49 weeks. They complete a structured capstone 1 course in preparation for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) step 1, the three-part exam required for medical licensure, also known as “the boards.” Over the course of the second phase, students develop the clinical judgment necessary to diagnose diseases and treat patients.
Students participate in core assignments in a variety of fields: Internal Medicine, Neurology/Rehabilitation, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Primary Care, Psychiatry, and Surgery. While all students have specific goals and expectations they must meet for each internship, much of the training depends on the needs of the treatment and management of patients during rotations.
Participate in one of several longitudinal courses once a week. These include Continuity Clinics, Problem-Based Learning Cases, Health Systems Science, Learning Communities: SHEP, and other peer learning experiences.
Writing Workshop: Clear Argumentative Writing
This sample outline represents the second phase of the NYU Long Island School of Medicine curriculum. During the second phase, students complete a transition to clinical care orientation and participate in one of four internship programs in which they rotate through all of the medical school’s internship specialties over the course of 49 weeks.
The phase two internship rotations include eight weeks of internal medicine, four weeks of primary care, six weeks of pediatrics, six weeks of obstetrics and gynecology, six weeks of surgery, four weeks of neurology/rehabilitation, and six weeks of psychiatry. Student writing programs vary. The four different tracks in the sample schedule provided are an example of what a stage schedule might look like in different scenarios.
In the second phase, all students follow the longitudinal courses at the same time as their internships. Longitudinal courses include Health Systems Sciences, Learning Communities: SHEP, Radiology, and CAPE.

Students also have four weeks of selective time and a four-week structured capstone to prepare for the USMLE Step 1 exam.
During the third phase of our curriculum, students spend 37 weeks completing longitudinal education experiences, emergency department rotations, an intermediate internship, an advanced internship, electives, and a Transition to Residency course. Students also participate in a second structured capstone course to prepare for the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge exam and have time to schedule residency interviews and pursue specialties of interest.
During this phase, you will also take the Comprehensive Clinical Skills Exam, a series of simulated patient encounters that assess your communication, history taking, physical examination and clinical reasoning skills.

This sample outline represents stage three of the NYU Long Island School of Medicine curriculum. During stage three, students complete a structured capstone in preparation for the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge exam; 4-week rotations in emergency medicine, an advanced clinical experience and a sub-stage; 12 weeks of electives; and a structured 4-week Transition to Residency course.
