Northeastern University Spring Break 2023 – A Northeastern University official said in an email Tuesday that the college is planning a “normal fall semester” after dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
In a letter to the school community, Provost David Madigan said Northeastern plans to return to the semester with “regular campus activities.”

“While COVID-19 will not be eradicated (it will likely be with us for years), most scientific projections suggest that the virus will be well under control by September,” Madihan wrote in the letter, citing a “widely available vaccine.” “” and easing the “burden of care” for K-12 faculty, staff and students returning to in-person classes.

Madigan noted that measures such as wearing masks and testing will likely still be in place, and that the university will monitor public health information and notify the public if fall plans change.

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is an inclusive, week-long service and learning experience. Northeastern students volunteer with community organizations in the US and around the world that address critical social issues such as affordable housing, environmental protection, youth education, and sustainable agriculture. Through meaningful action, reflection, and learning, our volunteers explore new places and cultures, work with people from diverse communities, and develop problem-solving and leadership skills for the future.

With the new spring 2021 academic calendar in mind, the Alternative Spring Break Program offers a series of alternative spring breaks in New England that will focus on how organizations and communities have responded to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tours run Friday through Sunday through March. More details will be announced after the winter break.

For ASB trips outside of Boston, volunteers fly to their destination through Logan International Airport. Volunteers travel to the host site for local and regional tours. The teams will travel together, departing on March 6th and returning on March 13th.
After that, ground transportation is provided. Some vehicles are operated by Northeastern-certified employees and students 21 years of age or older. For international travel, the host organization coordinates transportation.

Volunteers stay in modest accommodations in community centers, churches, hostels, camps, or Airbnbs. Team leaders provide detailed packing lists based on your trip and location prior to the trip.
ASB participants are not permitted to consume alcohol or drugs at any time on ASB tours, regardless of host state or host country laws. Any participant who violates this zero tolerance policy will be required to leave the tour at their own expense.
We carefully check our host sites to make sure they are doing a great job and can provide a safe environment for ASB groups. We work closely with Northeastern’s risk management and legal departments to ensure that hosted sites comply with university policies. We are also following travel advisories from the Department of State and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure the safety of volunteers.

In the event of a medical, security, political or other emergency, ASB participants will immediately notify Northeast City and the Office of Community Engagement. Northeastern is using GardaWorld Travel Security as the travel assistance and response provider, and GardaWorld and Northeastern will work together to facilitate the appropriate response. In the event of an emergency scenario, all reasonable accommodations will be made to ensure the safety of ASB participants and their prompt return to Boston. Costs and Fees Program Fees Fees for volunteers participating in ASB trips include flights, transportation between campus and Logan Airport, ground transportation to the host location, lodging, meals, site fees, and entry and exit fees. They do not include medical expenses, passport fees, travel insurance or gifts.
The cost of your trip and payment terms will be confirmed with you if your application is accepted by ASB.

Participating in ASB requires commitment and an investment of money and time. Historically, ASB has had a reversal policy. However, in light of COVID-19, there will be adjustments in our ability to recover costs. CCE will work to update our refund policies based on the refund policies of our host sites, accommodations and airlines.

Huskies Excel In The Classroom During Spring ’22
ASB teams typically consist of two student team leaders, nine student travel volunteers, and a university representative.
While each role has its own responsibilities, all ASB participants must fully participate in the program, including participation in pre-trip training and education, team meetings, and post-trip celebrations. Below are the requirements for each role.
We will send a list of ASB participants to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution and University Health and Counseling Services prior to the trip. We may reject an applicant based on OSCCR’s recommendation. UHCS may continue to review applicants for health issues related to participation in the ASB.
