“We are currently in the seventh week of the Spring 2021 semester, and for more than five of those weeks we have conducted converged, face-to-face learning. Since mid-January, NJIT has housed students in dormitories, opened offices for operations and regularly hosted nearly 4,000 people on campus. Students study in laboratories and classrooms; teaching staff is actively engaged in research; intercollegiate athletics competitions and trainings take place; and critical work is being done. During this time, we have seen strict adherence to our pandemic safety protocols and have completed approximately 6,000 surveillance tests with less than 70 positive results since the beginning of January. In addition to this positive news, we are working with University Hospital to provide access to vaccines for all of our eligible faculty and plan to expand this partnership based on revised government criteria and options. We must remain vigilant, but I am heartened by the way our university community has responded to the pandemic, as well as recent developments in national and regional immunization efforts. The federal government’s announcement last week that it will have an adequate supply of vaccines for every American adult by May 2021 gives us another reason for optimism.
