Originally named the Northern Arizona Normal School, the school opened on September 11, 1899 with 23 students, two principals—one, Alman Nicholas Taylor, who was the president of the school—and “two copy of Webster’s International Dictionary bound in sheepskin” teacher.

In 1929, the Great Depression hit the nation and ASTC had a new focus on community outreach. Instead of falling, the school was depressed. In fact, the school’s president at the time, Grady Gammage, described higher education as a “humbling business” that thrives on difficult times. Due to financial difficulties, ROLLMT grew from 321 studs to 535 studs between 1930 and 1940, and graduation was introduced in 1937.

ASTC provides education during difficult economic times, takes steps to help students continue their education; He worked at a dairy, in a kitchen and restaurant, and as a newspaper carrier. The college helped to manage financial resources, and contributed greatly to the local economy of the surrounding Flagstaff community, investing nearly half a million dollars in 1938.
ASTC is known for its diverse stud body and race tolerance. In fact, in 1939 Ida Mae Fredericks became the first Hopi to receive a university degree.
