If you’ve never used the annual interactive tool before, you’re in for a real treat. This year’s map begins on September 7th, and only a few states are predicting minimal and spotty foliage on that date. The map ends on November 23rd, which will be peak foliage for almost every country.
Using a data-driven algorithm, the map analyzes temperature and precipitation records from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and past peak leaf season trends to predict what foliage will look like across the United States in September, October, and November.
Although the map may not be 100 percent accurate, the tool gives a pretty good idea of the seasons.

In northern Maine, where conditions peak in late September, Forest Service officials reported less than 70% color change in 2021 and moderate leaf fall.
The reason why climate change might negatively affect leaf fall has little to do with plant biology.
Fall Foliage Update
In autumn, when daylight and temperature drop, the chlorophyll in leaves breaks down and loses its green color.
After the start of November, most of the country takes longer to peak, but Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida are the only states that will begin to see the color change. .
Dry summers stress trees and cause leaves to lose their fall colors altogether, and this year the United States and parts of the world have been hit by drought.

If they don’t lose their leaves, the plants will freeze over the winter months, which can damage and kill the tree.

Bournemouth lecturer Andy Brunning, author of Compound Interest, explains that compounds such as chlorophyll, carotenoids and flavonoids are present in leaves all year round but are most prominent at this time of year.
This chemical is stored in the chloroplasts of leaf cells and is an essential component of photosynthesis, where plants use energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar.

Plants need warm temperatures and sunlight to produce chlorophyll, and as fall begins and night falls, chlorophyll production slows down and chemical compounds in leaves deteriorate.
As a result, other compounds in the leaves, such as carotenoids and flavonoids, become more prominent, causing color changes.
It dominates most of the year, but produces less during the day when there is less light.
