It is highly recommended that you seek counseling at least once a year. There are times when counseling is necessary.
The first step is to receive academic advising through a departmental orientation meeting (see ECS Student Success Center) or by making an appointment to meet with an advisor. It is very important to understand the schedule and sequence in which you should take the courses.
You should be warned twice during your first year at CSUF. It is up to you to take the initiative to organize these counseling sessions.

The first thing you should do is schedule an appointment with an advisor to evaluate transfer credit that may apply to your major. If you have any questions about transferred general education courses, your advisor can also help. Please bring transcripts or grade reports, official or unofficial, to this appointment. A list of your former institutions can also be helpful, especially any institutions outside the area. You will probably also find it helpful to attend a group orientation (see Open Counseling above).
See a counselor at least every 12 months to make sure you’re on track. In fact, if you don’t meet the counselor at least once a year, the IT department will suspend your registration. Enrollment for the third semester will not be permitted unless the advisor is consulted. Don’t forget!
At least one year before your intended graduation, you must submit verification of graduation requirements. This “grade check” is required for graduation. For information on degree controls, search the current CSUF catalog. (See index for graduate control.)

When you receive your degree check in the mail, bring both copies and the degree coordinator will complete a section of that degree check that specifies which courses you still need to take to complete your major.
If you’re on probation, it’s definitely time to see a counselor. Until you do, a hold will remain on your file preventing you from registering. Your counselor will discuss with you the issues leading to your probation and review the strategies you should take to leave probation. Fix your consultation appointment in advance to avoid delay in your phone registration.
Be sure to follow the course requirements for your listing year. Your catalog year is determined by the admissions office and is part of your student record. This is usually the year you start college, although sometimes an advisor may approve a later year. If your list dates back to the year 1995/96, you should obtain the relevant supplement from the Computer Department Handbook.
