City Tech Fall 2023
As a futurist, it’s my job to look into the future, which is why every year I report on the emerging technology trends that will shape our digital world over the next 12 months.

Which technologies are getting the most attention? What are the biggest trends for business leaders to prepare for?
By 2023, AI will be a reality in organizations. With its simple drag-and-drop interface, no-code AI will allow any business to harness its power to create smarter products and services.
We’ve seen this trend in the retail market. Stitch Fix uses an AI-powered algorithm to recommend clothes to customers that match their size and taste.

Contactless and autonomous shopping and delivery will also be a big trend by 2023. AI will make it easier for consumers to pay for and receive goods and services.
AI will also augment virtually all jobs in all business processes across all industries. More retailers will use AI to manage and automate the complex inventory management processes that happen behind the scenes, thus facilitating trends such as buy online and pick up curbside (BOPAC), buy online and pick up in store (BOPIS), and buy online return-in-store (BORIS), will become the standard.
Artificial intelligence will also be the driving force behind the latest autonomous delivery initiatives retailers are testing and implementing, and more and more retail employees will need to get used to working alongside machines to get the job done.

I don’t particularly like the term “metaverse,” but it has become shorthand for a more immersive internet where we’ll be able to work, play, and socialize on one persistent platform.
Experts predict that the Metaverse will add $5 trillion to the global economy by 2030, and 2023 will be the year that defines where the Metaverse will go in the next decade.
Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies will continue to evolve. One area to watch is work environments in the Metaverse: by 2023, I predict we will have more immersive meeting environments where we can talk, brainstorm, and create together.

We’ll also see more advanced avatar technology in the new year. Avatars, our projected presences in the metaverse as we interact with other users, can look exactly like we do in the real world, and motion capture can even allow our avatars to assume our unique body language and gestures.
We could also see the further development of autonomous AI avatars that can act as our representation in the metaverse even when we are not connected to the digital world.
Companies are already using metaverse technologies like AR and VR for training and onboarding, a trend that will accelerate in 2023. Consulting giant Accenture has created a metaverse environment called Nth Floor. The virtual world features replicas of real-world Accenture offices, so new and existing employees can perform HR-related tasks without being in a physical office.

Right now, for example, we store everything in the cloud, but if we decentralize our data storage and encrypt it using blockchain, not only will our information be more secure, but we will have innovative ways to access and analyze it .
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will be more useful and useful in the new year. For example, NFT concert tickets might give you behind-the-scenes experiences and memorabilia. NFTs may be the keys we use to interact with the many digital products and services we purchase, or they may represent contracts we enter into with other parties.
We are already seeing a bridge emerging between the digital and physical worlds, and this trend will continue until 2023. There are two components to this merger: digital twin technology and 3D printing.

A digital twin is a virtual simulation of a real-world process, operation or product that can be used to test new ideas in a secure digital environment. Designers and engineers are using digital twins to recreate physical objects in the virtual world so they can test them in every conceivable condition without the high cost of real-life experiments. In 2023, we will see more digital twins, from factories to precision machinery, automobiles and healthcare.
After testing in the virtual world, engineers can modify and edit components, then use 3D printing to create them in the real world.
For example, Formula 1 teams currently collect data from sensors during races, along with track temperature and weather conditions, to understand how cars change during races. They then stream data from the sensors to a digital twin of the car’s engine and components, and run scenarios to make design changes on the fly. The team then 3D printed car parts based on their test results.

We will live in a world where we can change materials, plants and even humans through editing. Nanotechnology will allow us to create materials with entirely new properties, such as water resistance and the ability to self-heal.
CRISPR-Cas9 has been around for a few years, but by 2023 we’ll see an acceleration in gene-editing technology, giving us an ever-increasing ability to “edit nature” by altering DNA.
Gene editing works a bit like word processing, you can delete some words and add others, but you can do it with genes. Gene editing can be used to correct DNA mutations, address food allergies, improve crop health, and even edit human traits like eye and hair color.

Quantum computing, which uses subatomic particles to create new ways to process and store information, is a technological leap that promises to give us computers that run a trillion times faster than today’s fastest conventional processors.
The potential danger of quantum computing is that it could render our current encryption practices useless, so any country that develops quantum computing on a large scale could break the encryption of other countries, companies, security systems, etc. It’s a trend to watch closely in 2023, as countries like the US, UK, China and Russia pour money into developing quantum computing technology.
One of the greatest challenges facing the world today is curbing our carbon emissions so we can tackle the climate crisis.

By 2023, seek continued progress around green hydrogen, a new clean-burning energy source that produces virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions. Two major European energy companies, Shell and RWE, are building the first large green pipeline at wind farms in the North Sea.
We will also see progress in the development of decentralized electricity networks. Distributed generation using this model provides a system of small generators and energy storage systems located in communities or individual homes so they can provide power even when the main grid is unavailable. Currently, our energy system is dominated by large gas and electric companies, but a decentralized energy plan has the potential to democratize electricity around the world and reduce carbon emissions.
By 2023, robots will become more human-like in appearance and capabilities. These types of robots will be used in the real world as event hosts, bartenders, janitors and escorts for the elderly. They will also perform complex tasks in warehouses and factories, while working alongside humans in manufacturing and logistics.

A company is working to create a humanoid robot that could work in our homes. On Tesla AI Day in September 2022, Elon Musk showed off two Optimus humanoid prototypes and said the company would be ready to take orders within the next 3-5 years. Robots can perform simple tasks like lifting objects and watering plants, so maybe soon we’ll have “robot butlers” to help with household chores.
Business leaders will continue to make progress in creating autonomous systems, especially in delivery and logistics. Many factories and warehouses are already partially or fully automated.
In 2023, we will see more self-driving trucks and ships, as well as delivery robots, and more warehouses and factories will implement self-driving technology.
German Economy To Grow Slightly In 2023
Ocado, a British online supermarket that bills itself as “the world’s largest dedicated online grocery retailer”, uses thousands of autonomous robots in its highly automated warehouses to sort, handle and move groceries. Warehouses also use AI to put the most popular items within reach of robots. Ocado is now rolling out the autonomous technology behind its successful stores to other grocery retailers.
Finally, we will see a push for more sustainable technologies in 2023. Many if not most of us are addicted to technology like our smartphones, tablets and computers, but where do the components that make our favorite devices come from? People will think more about where rare earth components like computer chips come from and how we consume them.
We also use cloud services like Netflix and Spotify, which still run in huge data centers that consume a lot of electricity.
