The Timor Sea is the best place to watch the eclipse. April comes after the rainy season, when rainfall and cloud cover decrease from February’s maximum. The rainy season is approaching. Satellite observations reveal that the average cloud cover is less than 40% above sea level; in the southernmost region it is still sinking, reaching only 25 percent. Interestingly, most of this small cloud cover comes from tiny cumulus particles – clouds that are easily avoided in ships. Archived satellite images from 2000 show that a naval base in the central Timor Sea was able to see the April 20 eclipse in all but one of those years – among the best eclipse observations in history.

Komodo National Park was originally created as a sanctuary for the famous Komodo dragon, the world’s largest lizard. But the area also protects many marine species, providing opportunities for swimming and snorkelling. When you go ashore with Zodiac, you can swim off the coast of the island, admire the myriad species of coral, or relax and take in the peaceful beauty of this uninhabited paradise. This park is designated as a protected area by the World Wildlife Fund and Conservation International, located in Indonesia’s Wallacea region – named after Alfred Russel Wallace, a 19th century naturalist, who identified the transitions between the great ecosystems of Asia and Australia. . (This is the same Wallace who developed, without Charles Darwin, the theory of evolution by natural selection.)
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989, the park is barely developing; its about 30 islands are dotted with small fishing villages. And with one of the lowest annual rainfalls in Indonesia, it is the perfect habitat for the wildlife that the Wallacea region is known for. Areas of dense tropical rainforest open onto grassy areas filled with Ziziphus trees – the Komodo dragon’s favorite habitat. On the north coast of Timor Island, between the central mountains and the Ombai Strait, is Dili; A quiet seaside city, it was moved to become the capital of Timor-Leste when Timor-Leste became an independent nation in 2002. East Timor, as it was called then, declared independence from Portugal in 1975. after 400 years of colonial rule. A few days later, Indonesian troops captured the city of Dili and took over the country of East Timor. During the long guerrilla war that followed, around 200,000 East Timorese were killed. But today, Dili does not live up to this bad reputation. The city has a distinctly small-town atmosphere and Portuguese flavor – something local guides are proud to share as they show you around historical and cultural sites.
Traveling east of Timor-Leste, we find the second largest city, Baucau. Situated on a hill overlooking the sea, this busy market has a quiet old quarter filled with old souvenirs from the Portuguese colonial era. Then, we follow the winding road to the beach, where beautiful white sand beaches stretch as far as the eye can see. Along the coast, in remote villages and protected areas, you experience the real Timorese life – from musicians in traditional costumes welcoming their distinguished guests to villagers proudly sharing their culture through performances and handicrafts such as weaving and weaving. And of course you will have the opportunity to enjoy swimming and swimming in the clear blue water.
