Baltimore Orioles Spring Training 2023 – If it weren’t for the introduction of Tyler Wells and no injuries, the Orioles’ rotation would be the same as it was last season. But even manager Brandon Hyde doesn’t think this team can provide that kind of stability.
“If you told me our rotation was this year, I’d be a little confused,” Hyde said earlier this month.

Aside from veteran Jordan Lyles, the Orioles’ end-season rotation looked much different than it did at the beginning of the year, and at this point it’s reasonably conceivable. Opening Day starter Jon Means pitched twice before undergoing season-ending Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery. A Grade 2 lat strain kept Grayson Rodriguez out of his midseason debut. Minor league senior DL Hall is working out of the Baltimore bullpen to handle innings heading into the 2021 campaign.

But this week, Baltimore showed they can enter the season with confidence in their 2023 starting pick, even though the Orioles rotated an early-start pitcher at the end of the season.

The only catch is that Lyles pitched a full game against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in what could be his last home start at Camden Yards. The deal he signed with Baltimore last offseason includes a team option worth $11 million for next year.
Dodgers Roster: Infielder Rylan Bannon Claimed Off Waivers From Orioles
Rookie Kyle Brady had an American League-best 10 walks in 8 2/3 scoreless innings for the Houston Astros after returning from a sprained right shoulder. Dean Kramer, who was supposed to start the year in the bullpen the next day, was injured unexpectedly while warming up for his first outing, and he pitched a stoppage. On their respective injured lists, the pair have a 2.93 ERA in 31 games, all but one start.
“I think it’s very promising,” Hyde said. “These two guys, I really enjoyed watching them and the young ship, you’re really excited about the future of the talent these guys have. There’s still room for improvement, they’ve had a good time, it’s been fun watching them Progress has been made and they are excited to go into next year.”
Combine that with a solid start from starter Mike Bowman in Wells’ spot and five productive innings from Austin Water over the weekend, and the Orioles have their best rotation in years. All but Liles are guaranteed to compete for a rotation spot next spring.

Among those who joined them were Rodriguez and Hall. Rodriguez will make his final start before the end of the Triple-A season that ends Monday, his sixth since returning from a strained injury. It’s not out of the question that he starts against Baltimore before the season ends. According to executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias, Hall will enter next spring as a starter, though it’s unclear whether he’ll fill that role in the majors or minors.
Wells’ first season in the majors ended sooner than the rookie had hoped, but he said he hopes he returns in the spring, suggesting Hyde is good enough for the role. After being shut out by the Washington Nationals, the 30-year-old Vaught entered the rotation on a whim, and with a 2.77 ERA, he spent most of his time outside of Baltimore’s rotation. Like Bradish and Kramer — who allowed three runs in 44 1/3 innings against the 101-win Astros — Vaught has a chance to start for the Orioles next year, especially if he hopes to make a comeback.
After Successful 2022, Orioles Look To Continue Momentum In Offseason
“A guy who can do a lot of things, he’s definitely going to make a name for us,” Hyde said.
Both Spencer Watkins and Bruce Zimmerman have gotten more attention in the Orioles rotation this year and could be considered for plans for next season by staying on the 40-man roster. Elias said he expects a salary increase for the Orioles, and that the club should be on track to add at least one starter this offseason, either through free agency or by trading a slew of talented hitting prospects.
The ideal situation would be to go to spring training with “eight or nine starters,” Hyde said. The Orioles could enter the offseason with many of them, and last week was one example.

The final road trip of the year could involve history, clichés and the end of playoff hopes, all at the Orioles’ expense.
Baltimore’s playoff chances could be dashed in a week that begins with a four-game road trip with the Boston Red Sox and ends with a three-game road trip with the New York Yankees as they look to clinch the AL East champion. Here comes the Oriole. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is also on the verge of setting an AL home run record and could be on top against Baltimore if he doesn’t give up on the Toronto Blue Jays.

Yankees Spring Training
Adley Rutschman’s start was a turning point for Baltimore’s season. Gunnar Henderson had a great end to the season. But no Orioles have been as consistently impactful as Anthony Santander.
It continued last week, with Saturday’s two home runs giving him 29 for the year, the most in the majors by a conversion hitter entering Sunday. The Orioles haven’t hit 30 home runs in a year since Eddie Murray in 1987. Santander has improved significantly in every important offensive metric after an injury-minus 2021 season. % walk.
“He’s had a very consistent year,” Hyde said. “One-touch powerhouses are rare. … It’s hard to shut up when you’ve got 29 home runs right now. I think he’s had a really good year and hopefully he’ll end strong.
