Agu Fall Meeting 2023 – We are pleased to announce that AGU has selected the locations for our 2022 and 2024 Fall Meetings. The 2022 meeting will be held in Chicago, Ill. takes place, and the 2024 meeting will be held in Washington, D.C. occurs. This completes the plan for meeting places until 2026.
These two major cities are vibrant and anchored by strong scientific research communities. They offer convenient air travel with regular flights from all parts of the world as well as AMTRAK service. Both have robust sustainability programs in the convention center and throughout the city, and offer well-developed mass transit and abundant hotels in close proximity to the meeting, as well as a number of parks, museums, top-rated restaurants internationally, and other exciting amenities.

The Fall Meeting will officially switch to a rotational schedule, with San Francisco serving as an anchor city. This means that the meeting place will change on a regular basis. As you may recall, construction disruptions caused us to move the meeting from San Francisco in 2017 and 2018. Previously, the meeting had been held in San Francisco every December for more than 40 years. We are very grateful to San Francisco for being such a great host, as was New Orleans last year. We look forward to returning to both cities often.
In addition to looking forward to holding our first Fall Meeting in Chicago in 2022 and a successful return to Washington, D.C. in 2024, we can’t wait to celebrate AGU’s Centennial with you next December in San Francisco. Our town halls cover a wide range of topics, including networking, DEI, social media, and hydrology department priorities. All are invited to attend these Town Halls and many will be held in person and virtually. Information on accessing them virtually can be found on the AGU Scientific Program. Below we provide a brief summary of each Town Hall, including panelists, when and where, and a link to add it to your AGU schedule. Hope to see you there!
What: Are you an early career scientist looking for opportunities to connect with other peers and build collaborations? There is a growing need for collaborative research to address global hydrological challenges that are not always met due to barriers such as time and space for collaboration. This municipality, organized by the Student Subcommittee of the AGU Hydrology Section () and the Precipitation Student and Early Career Scientists (ECSprecip) subcommittee of the AGU, has the -aim to overcome these obstacles by creating a space where early career scientists can connect with each other. , share their research interests and find common ground for future collaboration. This Town Hall is also for those who want to learn tips and tricks about successful collaboration from domain experts. The town hall starts with a panel that reflects different careers within hydrology. The panelists represent industry, academia, research institutes, and will share their experiences on building and maintaining their collaborative network. The floor is open for questions after a short introductory round. After the Panel, participants will have the opportunity to introduce themselves and discuss ideas in small groups that rotate every 10-15 minutes.

TH13C: Finding your place for change: how and where to take an active role in DEI initiatives as early career researchers and students

What it is: Conversations aimed at addressing inequality and lack of diversity in the geosciences occur at many different organizational levels. These important conversations often focus on addressing systemic change at institutional levels. However, these conversations have led many students and early career researchers (SECR), who are in temporary positions with minimal influence, to question what part they can take in initiatives that lead the geosciences in a space that promotes the -accessibility, justice, equality, diversity. and inclusion (AJEDI). In this town hall, our invited panelists will discuss successful projects from their experience and share different approaches that the SECR can take in their area of influence. The conversation can help shape the future of the academy and determine various paths to support leaps of change in their communities. This session is open to all members of the community, especially students, and will involve questions from the audience to highlight specific opportunities and challenges for SECR.

Inside The Fall Meeting Of The American Geophysical Union In Its Centennial Year
What it is: Whether you’re an early-career scientist or well-established in your field, social media can be used to share your important research with a wide audience. It can also help you educate the public, inform policy, develop collaborations and cite your work. Twitter is a social media platform of choice for many academics. This municipality will have a diverse panel of academic Twitter users at different stages of their career as they discuss the successes and failures of social media communication. Members of all AGU chapters are encouraged to attend and interact with the panelists. Our goal is that you leave Town Hall with a better understanding of how to share your research through social media and maybe some new contacts online! We’ll ask the panelists questions like “How do you get your name out there?” “Where do you draw the line for tweeting political content?” “How do you advertise yourself to potential employers or employees?” and “How do you get people to come to your AGU talks?” You don’t want to miss this opportunity!

American Geophysical Union Calls For Abstract For Its 2019 Fall Meeting
What: With busy schedules made more busy by the challenges created by Covid-19, there is little time to come together as a Department of Hydrology to reflect on needs, desires, struggles and progress of the community. This municipality aims to provide an opportunity for section leadership and membership at all career stages to come together to discuss past, present and future section initiatives. Discussion topics will include year-round community involvement with AGU; initiatives suggested by the membership at career stages (eg how can the Department of Hydrology better support you?); accessibility, justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (AJEDI) initiatives and what was done by last year’s town hall (eg early career engagement, success and equity and demographics of grants). We encourage all members of the Department of Hydrology to join and help drive the department’s short-term and long-term goals and initiatives.
