Season start and end dates vary depending on who you ask. Each season has both an astronomical beginning and a meteorological beginning. It sounds complicated, but trust us, it’s not!

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the movement of the earth’s axis causes the seasons. The axis is always tilted in the same direction. Therefore, when the Earth revolves around the Sun in 12 months of the year, different parts of the Earth receive the direct rays of the Sun.
Look at the diagram below. When the North Pole moves towards the Sun, it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere. And when the South Pole moves toward the Sun, it’s winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

You may have noticed that the first day of spring is on a different date than when you were younger. Dates really change over time. Why? There are many reasons for this, but one that is easy to understand is this: the sun does not follow the human calendar!
While our Gregorian calendar is designed to match when the Earth completes one revolution around the Sun, it is not accurate. In particular, it excludes the last days of the century years that are not evenly divisible by 400, such as 1700, 1800, and 2100, and the millennial years that are divisible by 4000, such as 8000. And 12000.
Therefore, mating and birthday dates can change by a day or two in time, causing the start dates of seasons to change in time as well.
When Is The Winter Solstice 2023?
Sometimes it seems like winter goes on and on, but did you know that winter is actually the shortest season of the year? (In the Northern Hemisphere, that is.)
Why? Thanks to the elliptical shape of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, the Earth does not stay the same distance from the Sun throughout the year. When the Earth is closer to the Sun, the star’s pull becomes a little stronger and causes our planet to orbit a little faster. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, this results in a shorter fall and winter, as we travel faster through space this time of year. Conversely, when the Earth is furthest from the Sun, it moves more slowly, resulting in longer spring and summer. (The opposite is true in the Southern Hemisphere.)
