Over 11 days in mid-January, there are 86 competitions scheduled for 12 winter sports, including skiing, speed skating, hockey and cross country.
To prepare for the games and attract other events, New York City invested more than $400 million to upgrade Olympic facilities in the area.

“We made something that felt like a piece of ice and it was very angular,” Fowler said. “Almost, in shape, even like a mountain range.”

Meanwhile, workers have already started moving into the area and some have posted on housing Facebook groups saying they are struggling to find a place to live.
“We have to build,” Hochul said after a recent event in Lake Placid. “I’m not going to stop until we address that need, that’s what I’ve been hearing all along, it’s very expensive to live here. We have affordable workforce housing available so the funds are available as we speak.”
Hochul allocated $25 billion for affordable housing in this year’s budget, an investment that is part of the state’s five-year plan. But people have struggled for years to find long-term affordable housing in the Lake Placid area.
